Waterbury, CT, is probably best known today for its proximity to Yale University. However, in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, Waterbury was a huge industrial center. Most of the people living here worked in the factories. It was known for its brass industry, which earned the city the nickname "The Brass City." However, in time, the factories shut down, and now the city is a place for families to enjoy the tight knit communities and area attractions.

One of the biggest draws to Waterbury is the Quassy Amusement Park. This is a beach on Lake Quassapaug. Visitors can enjoy the beach, amusement rides or have a picnic. There is also Black Rock State Park which offers swimming, hiking, camping and fishing. The city also offers rafting on the Housatonic or Farmington rivers and golfing at East Mountain and Western Hills golf courses. For those more interested in downtown, the Palace Theater has been renovated into a performing arts center, which offers everything from country music concerts to children’s plays. The city also has a ballet and symphony.

Waterbury also has been named one of the best places to raise a family. With a median home price around $107,000, it also is an affordable place to live. The neighborhoods in Waterbury are very community minded and often steeped in history. In Brooklyn, it is no surprise that the people who settled this neighborhood came from Brooklyn, New York. It was once a melting pot of ethnicities, but today, it is largely made up of those of Latin American heritage. Historic districts are also common in Waterbury. Bunker Hill is a very self-reliant neighborhood whose residents make it a very tight knit community. It is mainly single-family homes in the National Historic District. The Hillside Historic District is actually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a residential area that used to be the place where the town’s most respected and well-off residents lived.
