Originally settled in the 1800s by enslaved African Americans who helped build the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s campus, Northside has long been an enclave of Black culture and life in Chapel Hill. The neighborhood’s churches and rec center served as social hubs for the town’s Black population when Jim Crow laws barred them from many community spaces. Northside also played a prominent role during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s.
