Florida can trace back archeological evidence of human habitation for nearly 14,000 years. Written history, however, begins in 1513 with the arrival of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León. From that time until 1821, Florida switched back and forth between Spanish and British rule. When Florida became the 27th state to join the United States, half of its population consisted of cotton and sugar plantation slaves. The state's vital importance to southern commerce prompted a full blockade by Union troops during the Civil War. From 1950 to 2000, the state went from being the twentieth most populous state to the fourth, due to advances in air conditioning, Interstate highways and mosquito reduction.
