Steeped in history, 112 William Street was built in 1856 by a local builder named Robinson. He crafted the unusual peaked roof in the center of the house, an anomaly in the architecture of the day, as peaks set off-center. If you want small town living, this is the perfect location; one-half block from the center of downtown, located on a very private street of stately Vineyard homes. The stone walls that surround the house are constructed from old world ballast stones brought over in the lower holds of sailing ships from England. Using them as weight so the cargo-less boat would sail correctly, the sailors would dump the stones upon arrival and replace the weight with coveted "Vineyard Wool". Because of their small size, and interlocking ability, the walls are intricate, permanent and stunning. Robinson left the house to his daughter, who married William Barry Owen, a business man who acquired the European rights to Victor Records in the early 1900's. (hence Owen Park). Making his fortune in recording devices, his prize dog, "Nipper" (the RCA/Victor dog), is at his final resting place in a corner of the yard. Purchased in 1987, the present owners transformed the property into a true "villa" in 1991, with a terraced yard, bocce court and amazing masonry inside and out. The new construction created a stunning open kitchen/great room, with rare Douglas Fir, hand hewed, two foot wide support beams, an oversize ballast stone fireplace, and a beautiful, large bay window overlooking the charming gardens. The kitchen/great room recreates the majestic era of days gone by, but has a modern, open, living floor-plan at the same time. The original Ice House has been carefully refurbished, creating storage areas and a delightful loft which may be used as an extra guest room, an office or play room. There are two master bedrooms and two other large bedrooms allowing for family and friends to visit. The one-time maids room has been converted into a garden room. With a large dining room, office/library with a fireplace, living room with an oversize fireplace, screened-in porch and many other inviting nooks, this home offers peace and quiet, even with a house full. Internally, all the electrical, heating and plumbing systems have been modernized to today's standards. Designed by a Landscape Architect, the grounds are an amazing retreat, with many different private area's and mature fruit trees which supply a bounty of delicious treats.
