The historic Mendota Light House is restored (and is privately owned) on Bete Gris South. Just west of Bete Grise is LacLabelle. Lac La Belle is French for "The Beautiful Lake", the name given to both the lake and the small unincorporated community which has an active tourist industry. The 1,100 acre, 39 foot deep lake is connected to Lake Superior by the Mendota Ship Canal, a wide man-made channel out to the "Big Lake". Fishing is fantastic in Lac La Belle, for Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, Northern Pike, Walleye, Musky and Perch, or you can take the short trip through the channel to Lake Superior for Salmon, Steelhead, Brown Trout, Lake Trout.
