Sedgwick County was organized in 1889 from a part of Logan County, which was territory originally occupied by the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians. The county and nearby community was named in honor of General John Sedgwick, who was command of Fort Wize on the Arkansas River. Nearby Chappell was platted in 1884when theUnion Pacific Railroad extended its line to the area, establishing a station that became the nucleus of the town. The town was named after Charles Henry Chappell, a railroad official responsible for building the train depot. The first permanent resident and station agent was John O'Neil, who also taught the first school in the depot, marking the beginning of formal education in what is now Deuel County.
