Philadelphia road. In the 1940s, the literary powerhouse couple Allen Tate and Caroline Gordon
bought the property and made it their own; famous guests reportedly included T.S. Eliot,
Edmund Wilson, and Dorothy Day. The dining room’s decorative fireplace has the word
“UNION” etched into the stone, likely a marker that this was a safe house for the pre-Civil War
Underground Railroad. Downtown Princeton, with its many restaurants and boutiques, is a
short walk away, and Riverside Elementary School is just down the block.
