History:

Greek Revival in style, with a handsome stoop, elegant cornices and distinctive wrought ironwork, this home was part of an original row of 4 townhomes from No. 23 - 29 built together in the 1840s. Samuel Holmes, a dry goods merchant, made his home at No. 27, which had been built for him in 1845. In the years that followed, 27 East 11th Street became home to Willard Travell, a notable doctor of the late 1800s - early 1900s, and his family. It is the birthplace of Willard's daughter, Janet Travell, who was elected as the first female White House physician.
