1864 HISTORIC LODGE ON OLIVEREA RD: Located just down the road from Slide Mountain, the highest peak in the Catskills, this is one of those homes that is a Catskills one-of-a-kind. Originally built in the 1860s, upgraded in the 1940s or 50s, the most recent owners have lived there full-time since the 1980s and have lovingly restored it to its current contemporary condition, successfully integrating the old with the new. The rooms on the main floor are more than generous, there is a huge living room with unique stone fireplace, (NOTE: Allegedly, a featured stone in the fireplace is a meteorite fragment from a meteor strike millions of years ago that was instrumental in forming the geography of the Oliverea area) opening into a large formal dining room with a built-in cupboard, and then an equally large working kitchen with handmade cabinets, stainless steel appliances including a 6-burner professional range, a pantry and extensive windows across the counter area. It is a step down off the kitchen to a laundry room and utilities, and in the other direction, a half bath with sink and low-flush toilet. Behind the living room there is also a den or office with built-ins, (hiding an electric panel with a hook-up for a generator if you wish). A front door from the living room goes out to the covered front porch, and a door from the dining room goes out to a quiet deck in the back of the house. Walking upstairs, there are six available bedrooms. Two are suites, made up of two rooms, both with large closets. Three are wallpapered with closets, and one other is sheetrocked with built-in storage. There is a recently renovated bathroom--the door has lovely stained glass detail--the bathroom has recently been completely redone, with white and decorative tile work, a shower/tub combination, and a new vanity and low-flush toilet. That completes the inside of the house. Outside, some details: The septic is a state of the art DEP septic, and the well is on the other side of the house--there is a covered 3-car carport with lots of extra space and storage, also a stone barbeque that encourages wood grilling, even on a rainy day. There is also an additional shed on the property. Furthermore, the exterior stonework is lovely, in fact, you pull into the parking area between two fieldstone pillars, and there are pillars flanking the flagstone path to the front door on the porch. There are mature perennial plantings, and a patio off the kitchen on the side lawn, as well as a wood deck in the very back of the house. And if you run out of places to be, you can always take the steps up the side yard into the woods and lose yourself in a forest ramble--good practice for preparing to climb Slide Mountain just up the road!
