Located in the suburbs of Tampa, the unincorporated community is home to Lithia Springs Park, which is on the Alafia River. The park has much to offer; one of its popular attractions is a natural spring. Since the water temperature remains around 72 degrees year round, the spring is a popular place for swimmers. Other features include a bath house, playground and picnic tables. The park has 44 camping areas, and it also is a great location for canoeing and kayaking. It is home to many different species of wildlife, such as turtles and many different types of fish. For those who enjoy hiking, the park offers a plethora of nature trails. With a population of about 8,500, Lithia has many public and private elementary and middle schools. The area has a rich history, and had been inhabited by many Native American Tribes, including the Tomokan and Seminole tribes. Images of earlier times are on display at the Indian and Western Art Gallery, which is in Lithia. Saw mills and agriculture are part of the area's history. The community received its name when Lithium was found in the spring. Shortly after this discovery, which took place around 1900, the area became known as Lithia.
