Pierce Manufacturing, SECURA Insurance and a number of other companies base their operations in Appleton. The city has two hospitals: Appleton Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital.

This seemingly modest midwestern town has multiple tourist attractions that bring in many annual visitors. Completed in 1881, the Hearthstone House is a large mansion that was the first home ever powered with hydroelectricity. The History Museum at the Castle has multiple exhibits on local history including one on Harry Houdini. Every summer, the city is home to the Mile of Music festival. The four-day event covers College Avenue and draws thousands of visitors. The Fox River Mall is the second largest in the state and local families enjoy the many other events hosted in the Houdini Plaza. Appleton citizens have 24 neighborhood parks as well as 4 additional community parks. These areas range from 2 to 139 acres. The largest park is Memorial Park, which has a picnic pavilion, an indoor ice skating rick and seven baseball fields. The oldest park, City Park, hosts an annual Art in the Park Showcase that features more than 200 arts and draws a crowd of 25,000 annually.
