A blend of history and modernity
It's almost impossible to think about Austin without conjuring images of the state capitol building, its dome of Texas pink granite reaching more than 300 feet into the sky and the Goddess of Liberty holding her star atop the rotunda. As the centerpiece of the Texas Capital neighborhood, the capitol and its history are inextricably linked to the area. Visitors to the Capitol grounds can take in memorials to Texas African American and Tejano history, monuments celebrating veterans of past military conflicts and statues dedicated to cultural touchstones like the Texas cowboy and the Alamo. A few blocks away is the Bullock Texas State History Museum, whose interactive exhibits chronicle the state’s history. At the same time, the neighborhood looks to the future: It hosts events for the annual South by Southwest tech conference, serves as a home base for some of the city’s cutting-edge businesses and reverberates with the dynamic energy that defines Austin. “The neighborhood is an ideal location for people who want to be close to the pulse of Austin,” says Realtor and area resident Judith Bunschuh. “It’s walking distance to the University of Texas campus, the capitol, Sixth Street and so much more. It’s the heart of the city.”
Visitors to the Texas Capitol can explore grounds with monuments, statues, and lush landscaping.

Culture, Austin style
In addition to the historical and cultural offerings at both the Capitol and the Bullock Texas State History Museum, those living in the Texas Capital neighborhood are within walking distance of yet another quintessentially Austin destination, the Museum of the Weird, which bills itself as “America’s Strangest Attraction.” With exhibits ranging from odd (like an animatronic doll from “Gremlins 2”) to the inexplicable (such as the only known prototype of the original Cottingley Fairies photograph) to the truly bizarre (the Fiji Mermaid, anyone?), the Museum of the Weird is doing its part to keep Austin weird. For a little more high-brow immersion, residents can take in the exhibits at the Contemporary Austin – Jones Center, which showcases the works of Texan contemporary artists in a modern and hip setting. And the Paramount Theatre has been presenting some of the biggest names in entertainment since its construction in 1915. The Paramount has hosted such luminaries as Harry Houdini, Katharine Hepburn, Miles Davis and Barack Obama in its distinguished history.

Eat and shop like an Austinite
Whether residents of Texas Capital are craving an artisan coffee and a bacon maple doughnut, a hot bowl of Texas chili or some of the best barbecue around, it’s all within walking distance. Locals can start their day at nearby Voodoo Doughnuts with coffee and a sweet treat from a menu that has to be seen to be believed. Texas Chili Parlor offers its namesake staple in options ranging from mild to XXX hot, along with an extensive Tex-Mex menu. And Stubbs Barbecue is an Austin institution, where diners can feast on slow-smoked meats slathered in sauce made famous by founder Christopher “Stubb” Stubblefield. For some evening entertainment, the assorted bars and nightclubs of Austin’s famed Sixth Street are also within walking distance. Home cooks can get all their kitchen essentials a few blocks south at Royal Blue Grocery or a few blocks north at Target. Every Saturday morning in nearby Republic Square, the Sustainable Food Center sponsors a farmers market with 75-plus local vendors, live music and plenty of open space. Those in need of retail therapy can indulge in the shops along South Congress, 2 miles south of the neighborhood, where local boutiques stand side-by-side with national brands. A few blocks north of the neighborhood is the eclectic assortment of shops lining the Drag, the section of Guadalupe that parallels the UT campus. Residents can stock up on Longhorn paraphernalia at the University Co-Op before heading to a game.
