Named for its four pairs of cross streets, the tiny neighborhood of Four by Four in northeast Baltimore is almost entirely residential. However, it still provides prime access to some of the city’s most prominent parks. “There is a lot of buying and renovating going on right now in that area,” says Megan Wich, a Realtor with Harris Hawkins & Co. “I’ve been working with one investor who is buying several homes in the area and updating them. The houses have a lot of potential.”

Set back from the unmarked roadways, most homes have small staircases leading up to their front doors and petite front yards, often edged by chain-link fencing. A quick walk to the other side of Belair Road will lead to Clifton Park, once farmland owned by Johns Hopkins. Nearby Herring Run Park, situated just a mile north of Four by Four, spans 375 acres. The Herring Run Stream runs the length of the park and is flanked by trails. The expansive green space also features a playground for kids to roam, a basketball court and a pedestrian bridge. History buffs might consider exploring the historic Baltimore Cemetery, neighboring Four by Four’s southern end. With a towering gateway that feels reminiscent of medieval times, the cemetery built in 1850 is the final resting place of some of Baltimore’s former movers and shakers, including brewery founders like the Vonderhorst family, who also owned the Baltimore Orioles in the 1800s.

Small shopping centers nearby
Small complexes, including Belair Edison Crossing and Erdman Shopping Center, are adjacent to the neighborhood and allow residents to knock out most of their errands in one fell swoop. Each features grocery stores like Food Depot and Save-A-Lot. There’s also a Shoppers World, a Rainbow clothing outlet, dollar stores and ATMs. Right next door, locals will find the Enoch Pratt Free Library’s Herring Run Branch, which offers computers for public use, a wide variety of free events and workshops, and its expansive book collection. Traveling north along Belair Road leads to Bertha’s Soul Food Bar and Grill. The small, unassuming local joint is beloved by customers for its fried catfish, collard greens and mac and cheese. Those with a sweet tooth can check out Woodlea Bakery, where their handmade cakes and pastries are on full display.

Magnet programs at Baltimore City Public Schools
Students here are zoned for Baltimore City Public Schools. They may begin their education at Fort Worthington Elementary/Middle School, which earns a C-minus from Niche and serves students in kindergarten through eighth grades. They may later filter into Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, which features a magnet program in biomedical sciences and gets a C rating from Niche. The neighborhood is also home to The Catholic High School of Baltimore. While the neighborhood is primarily car-dependent, Maryland Transit Administration bus stops along Edison Highway and Belair Road connect locals to surrounding amenities. For access to medical care, locals can make the 3-mile drive along East 33rd Street to MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Interstate 895 can also connect commuters to the greater Baltimore area, including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, roughly 17 miles away.
