The cosmopolitan boom of Baltimore
After the Civil War and the industrial boom of the early 1900s, Harbor East was little more than a defunct train station and a handful of empty warehouses. Anyone who remembers the days before the 1980s would hardly recognize this cosmopolitan neighborhood now. Since then, historic President Street Station has watched as towering glass skyscrapers, luxury hotels and chic retailers have grown up around it and transformed Harbor East into the gateway of Baltimore. “People love the walkability to restaurants and retail and the great access to Interstate 83,” says Holly Winfield, Realtor and vice president of Monument Sotheby’s International, who has lived in Harbor east for 10 years. “There are quite a few Hopkins doctors who live here so the proximity to Hopkins is also a big draw. And there are a lot of empty-nesters who are downsizing from the county.” On every side, this area is surrounded by nightlife destinations. While it has a CAP Index crime score of 9 out of 10, significantly higher than the national average of 4, Harbor East continues its successful boom, drawing more residents every day to its lavish community.

Hungry in Harbor East
Harbor East is quickly becoming a shopping destination for visitors from around the state. “The area has been morphing into a place people want to shop,” Winfield says. “It’s nice to be able to drive to Target, the flagship Whole Foods is right down the street and there’s even a weekend Farmer’s Market at Harbor Point.” And some of the best of Baltimore’s restaurant scene can be found here. Jazz fans will enjoy their proximity to Keystone Korner on Lancaster Street, where they can take in world-class performances and sample the refined Americana menu of a Michelin-starred chef. Tagliata on Fleet Street features nightly piano music to accompany the dining experience. And cozy speakeasy The Elk Room, hidden behind an unmarked black door in Tagliata’s courtyard, recreates the atmosphere of Prohibition-era America while offering an extensive list of spirits and craft cocktails.

High-rise condos overlooking the Chesapeake
Prospective homeowners will not find the typical picture of Charm City real estate in Harbor East. “It’s more high-rise living than one might expect from Baltimore,” Winfield says. “People always think of row houses when they think of this city, but there are hardly any of those around, and what is here has mostly been converted into small businesses.” Luxury condos and apartments make up the bulk of the housing stock, with buildings looking out over Harbor Point, the Chesapeake Bay and Maryland icon Mr. Trash Wheel - the sustainable refuse interceptor with large eyes that helps keep the harbor clean. One-bedroom options begin as low as $320,000, with prices soaring over $1 million for harbor-side two- and three-bedroom units.

Concerts and more in Crabtown
Residents of Harbor East are right in the thick of Baltimore’s downtown nightlife and are spoiled for choice when it comes to evenings on the town. The neighborhood borders Little Italy to the north, famous for cultural street festivals celebrating Catholic feast days. Fells Point is a mile east, where local bands play nightly in the many taverns and pubs along Broadway. Immediately west across the canal footbridge is Pier 6 Pavilion, which hosts thousands of concerts throughout the year. “You can easily walk from here to Harbor Point to Fells,” Winfield says. “It’s all connected. It’s a bit longer, but you can even walk to the Inner Harbor. You’ll definitely see your neighbors walking across the footbridge to Orioles and Ravens games.”

Getting around Baltimore
While walkability is a key factor in Harbor East’s appeal, it is not the only way to get around the neighborhood. Residents are afforded easy access to Interstate 83, the highway which bisects the city. Interstate 95 is also close by and offers the most direct route to Baltimore Washington International Airport 13 miles south. The CityLink Navy bus line runs along Eastern Avenue past Patterson Park, while the Green Route heads up Broadway to the Johns Hopkins Hospital 1.5 miles away.
Green space by the Inner Harbor
The closest green space to the neighborhood is Pierce’s Park, a small pocket of grass and shady trees located across the canal footbridge. There is a small playground here, along with several modern sculptures which children and adventurous adults enjoy climbing. Just 1 mile east, residents can head to the more extensive Patterson Park, which features a boat lake, ice rink and several miles of paved walking trails.
