Capehart’s blend of suburban subdivisions, public housing and rural homes sits where Bangor’s city lifestyle fades into the Maine countryside. “It's almost like you're close to the country, but you're right in the city,” says Evelyn Conrad, a Realtor with Realty of Maine who’s sold homes here for over seven years. “I find that they’re super affordable houses, especially for a first-time homebuyer who doesn’t have a whole lot of money but needs space.” The community was originally built as military housing for the Dow Air Force Base, which closed in the 1960s and is now Bangor International Airport. Today, new subdivisions can be found throughout the area, and more are being built. The city’s bus has routes in the community, and downtown Bangor is roughly 4 miles away. Many of Capehart’s homes were built in the 1950s as military housing. These include two-story townhouses and ranch-style houses where two units are connected by a garage, which Conrad says were originally the captains’ houses. “They were built really well, and if they were maintained, then they’re a great little buy, and affordable,” Conrad says.
