A suburban community that checks many boxes
When Northeast Bethlehem became part of the city over 100 years ago, it quickly became a neighborhood where workers from local industries, like Bethlehem Steel, the second-largest steel producer in the United States, could live. Today, the neighborhood attracts workers and commuters looking to get more home for their money. “The Lehigh Valley is a warehouse hub,” says Realtor Wade Ames. He and his wife Anna, the Ames Team, have nearly 30 years of combined experience with Weichert Realtors. “You can reach 30% of the U.S. population from Bethlehem. FedEx and Amazon both have hubs here. You can also commute to New Jersey, New York or Philadelphia. Highway 22 is minutes away. I-78 and Route 309 are nearby, too. It’s very convenient.” Given the need to house workers, families, professionals and retirees, Northeast Bethlehem offers a mix of homes and amenities that satisfy a variety of budgets and lifestyles. “The neighborhood has a more suburban feel,” says Anna Ames. “Cape Cods are perfect for homebuyers starting out or downsizing. Colonials have room for growing families. It has grocery stores, fast food and local eateries. You’re also close to downtown, playgrounds, hiking and fishing.” A lifelong Bethlehem resident, Anna has seen the northeast part of town grow. She says, “It’s a good sticking place; you’re close to everything, and homes there have a lot of charm.” Northeast Bethlehem also receives a crime score of 2 out of 10 from CAP Index. The national average is 4.

Suburban homes in high demand
With most homes built between 1940 and 1980, Northeast Bethlehem is a mecca of suburban styles and design. Vintage Cape Cods line the streets of this neighborhood and feature hardwood floors, sunrooms or side porches, fenced backyards and off-street parking. They can sell for between $230,000 and $400,000. Ranch-style homes are a favorite, too, and can range from $250,000 to $375,000. They often include carports or attached garages, finished basements with extra living space, and covered porches overlooking the backyard. Large four-bedroom colonial-style homes with built-in fireplaces and family rooms are priced from $350,000 to $475,000. High-end homes on a half-acre or more can list from $500,000 to $1 million. “It’s highly competitive in this part of Bethlehem,” Anna Ames says. “Homes don’t stay on the market for longer than two weeks. Renovated or updated homes often end up in a bidding war because demand to live here is so high.” Two- and three-bedroom townhouses are also available and sell for between $175,000 and $500,000.

Monocacy and Illick’s Mill parks are part of the complex and feature an off-leash dog park, a place to fish and picnic, a granite dam and a suspension bridge. Next door, the Bethlehem Golf Club is a public 18-hole championship course that’s earned a four-star rating from Golf Digest. The Pennsylvania Playhouse on Illick’s Mill Road is a small community theater that produces classic musicals, cabarets, children’s theater and popular dramas. The Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink is across the street, and beside it is the Memorial Pool, where visitors can swim laps, enjoy the water slide or play in the kiddie pool.

There, Big Woody’s Sports Grill is a place to enjoy pizza, beer and the big game. To the north, Josh Early Candies on Linden Street is a Lehigh Valley institution.
