Bolinas is a small coastal village about 30 miles from San Francisco, with a single road leading into and out of the community. It also has a tight housing inventory. Homes span a wide range of styles, including midcentury modern ranch-style houses, chalet cottages and traditional beach houses. There are also large luxury estates. Students are split between the Bolinas-Stinson Union School District and Tamalpais Union High School District.
Bolinas Beach draws surfers, anglers and beachcombers. The Bolinas Lagoon Nature Preserve, a 1,100-acre tidal estuary, shelters seals and waterfowl. RCA Beach at Agate Beach County Park is next to Duxbury Reef, a protected marine reserve well known for its tide pools. Trails cross the bluffs toward the shoreline, and Mesa Park has a playground and a skate park. National, state and county parks surrounding the area have even more hiking, swimming and wildlife-viewing options. Downtown Bolinas has galleries, coffee shops and a grocery store, plus a farm stand with produce. Smiley's Saloon, established in 1851, often hosts live music, and the Bolinas Museum has rotating exhibits.
