Why Live in Medford Street-The Neck

Separated by Interstate 93 on the border of Somerville and Charlestown, Medford Street-The Neck is an eclectic, urban neighborhood just outside Boston. The construction of Interstate 93 through the neighborhood in the 1950s, part of Boston’s urban renewal efforts, altered the neighborhood’s original landscape. "The highway and Sullivan Station changed the connection the neighborhood had. The western side of the neighborhood has an enclave of homes wedged between Somerville and the highway that is still technically part of Charlestown. MacDonald explains that, although the area has no official name, some call it the “Lost Village” or “Forgotten Charlestown.” Others refer to only that part of the neighborhood as “The Neck.” The eastern side of the neighborhood is still connected with the rest of Charlestown, on the Mystic River. Either way, the area offers extensive transportation options into Boston’s city center and a diverse, unique community within walking and biking distance of many
