A college community just outside of Boston
Allston is a trendy and bustling college community less than 5 miles from the heart of Boston. The area is bordered by Brighton Avenue and Interstate 90 and is easily accessible by the T. Densely packed with housing and dining options, this primarily urban neighborhood is also close to collegiate life. The area has been gaining popularity with young professionals as it is home to the global headquarters of New Balance, a major employer since 2015. The headquarters, which some say looks more like a cruise ship, is composed of a track and field facility, a fitness center that is often open to the public and a spot for public events.

Beacon and Cambridge Street dining
“The whole area of Beacon Street and Cambridge Street has a bunch of bars and restaurants,” says Rico Torres, a previous resident and area student for over 3 years. People often head to the nearby Sloanes, popular for its daily brunch options like chicken and mashers and signature dishes like the Oklahoma onion burger. Torres says Allston is also well known for the number of highly-rated Korean restaurants. One such spot is Coreanos, a small hole in the wall that serves everything from classic Korean dishes to Mexican fusion creations. Locals have plenty of options when stocking up their kitchens as the neighborhood is home to four different grocery stores, including Star Market and Stop & Shop. Residents can also stop by the New Balance headquarters and factory store at the western end of the neighborhood for sportswear shopping.

The Massachusetts Turnpike cuts through the neighborhood’s northern portion, streamlining the commute to downtown Boston. Ample public transportation is also available to residents, including multiple Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority bus stops and the Boston Landing T station on the neighborhood's southern end. With so many campuses and dining options nearby, many residents choose to stroll the streets with friends for day-to-day travel, like walking to class or a bar on the weekends. Boston Logan International Airport is 9 miles east of the neighborhood, and St. Elizabeth's Medical Center is less than a mile southeast of the neighborhood on Cambridge Street.

Music halls and street fairs
The Allston Village Street Fair attracts more than 100,000 visitors each September to its live music stages, vendor market and international food court. Proceeds go back to the Brighton and Allston communities to help keep the fun alive year-round. Locals can also head to the Rat City Arts Festival in July to support local artists and enjoy a beer with friends at Aeronaut Brewery. More frequent events like weekly live music can be found at Brighton Music Hall and Roadrunner.
Riverside preservations and urban playsets
Residents often spend their free time on restaurant patios with friends or outdoors at one of the nearby parks. Visitors to Christian Herter Park can walk, explore the playset and splashpad or take in the views of nature and the city skyline. Part of the 20-mile Charles River Reservation, this is one of the most scenic spots around. Smith Playground is the other major green space in the community, with a modern playset alongside an amphitheater, greenspaces and even a pump track for skateboards and scooters. However, Torres says that going southwest from Boston University is where there is a lot more fun stuff to do, like Newton Commonwealth Golf Course or Webster Conservation area.

Rat City
The Allston area is sometimes referred to as Rat City by locals due to the large number of pests in the area. This can be attributed to factors like quick access to food or some of the older residences not having pest control systems in place. However, many residents do not seem to mind it, as it has just become a part of daily life.
