Carson City’s Stewart area shares its name with the institution that began boarding Native American children from Nevada’s Great Basin tribes in 1890. Closed in 1980, the Stewart Indian School’s campus survives through the neighborhood of distinct stone buildings distributed across the lush fields between Snyder Avenue and Clear Creek. The site, designated a historic property in 1985, now houses a museum and hosts events like a massive annual powwow. Beyond this attraction, Stewart offers extra room and modern living between a busy commercial corridor and acres of rugged hills with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. “The south end of Carson is very close to all the restaurants, grocery stores, shopping, Home Depot, Costco and things like that.
