Why Live in Cerro Gordo

Cerro Gordo is a small village of roughly 1,300 residents in eastern Piatt County town on the outskirts of Champaign. "The university is the largest employer in the area with about 1 in 7 people in Champaign County working for the university,” says Russ Taylor, Realtor with the Russ Taylor Team at Taylor Realty Associates. Many folks here commute about 40 miles away to Champaign for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. A handful of civic groups keep community spirit high with summer ball tournaments, holiday parades and the annual Firemen’s Hog Roast, which doubles as the volunteer department’s biggest fundraiser. The residential blocks closest to Main Street showcase early-20th-century American Foursquare homes with broad front porches and sturdy brick or clapboard exteriors. Farther out, 1950s and ’60s ranches mix with newer traditional builds on roomy quarter- to half-acre lots. Typical asking prices run from roughly $180,000 to $250,000—well below metro averages—yet buyers move quickly because inventory is limited and many sales are handled word-of-mouth. Plenty of backyards include detached garages or small barns, making hobby farming easy. Cerro Gordo Grade School
