When Ardmore-Sherwood Forest was established in the mid-20th century, it was home to many of Charleston’s shipyard and naval workers. During the second half of the 20th century, white flight caused the neighborhood to slip into disrepair. However, residents banded together to take care of each other. The Pink House, a non-profit organization through Lowcountry Christian Center Seventh Day Baptist Church, offers programs to help residents, including after-school care for kids and food distribution. In 2024, the neighborhood was chosen for the “Love Your Block” grant, which funds residents’ initiatives to improve public spaces and homes. First-time buyers are now moving in, attracted to competitive home prices, the neighborhood’s residential charm and its location about 6 miles from downtown Charleston. The homes in Ardmore-Sherwood Forest are primarily minimal traditional and ranch-style from the 1950s to the 1970s. They have three or four bedrooms and range from $200,000 to almost $500,000. Lower-priced homes tend to be fixer-uppers, and higher-priced homes are either fully renovated or rebuilt from the ground up in the
