Historic J. T. Williams
J. T. Williams, sometimes also referred to as Druid Hills North, is a community tucked less than three miles from Charlotte’s City Center. This community has a rich history dating back to the 1800s, when local businessman and doctor J. T. Williams owned and operated a drug store in the area. Williams was one of the first three Black men to become doctors in the state of North Carolina and served as the consul to Sierra Leone from 1898 to 1907. “There’s a sense of community pride here,” says Johnson Bray, development associate with ATCO who works on Camp North End just south of the neighborhood. “Many of the residents have lived in their homes for decades, and they really care about their community. There’s a dynamic here that you don’t get in many big cities.” Bordered to the north by I-85 and the west by I-77, J. T. Williams provides ease of travel by car to all corners of the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metropolitan area. Charlotte’s Uptown is accessible in around 3 miles on city roads.

Inexpensive homes rising in value
Housing styles mainly consist of small ranch-style homes, but two-story contemporary builds have started popping up as the area starts to see an increase in home values. Despite this recent increase, prices here are still well below both the national and Charlotte averages. A limited number of craftsman builds also add flair to the streetscapes of J. T. Williams. Many of the older houses have previously or are set to be renovated. This will likely continue to raise home values in the coming years, as the average home price in the neighborhood has already more than doubled since 2019, going from just over $130,000 to over $280,000. Older 2-4 bedroom properties with driveways and yards often go for between $250,000 and $400,000.
