Northlake residents can travel Charlotte or stick close to home
Northlake residents are in the enviable position of living near both Interstate 77, which runs straight to Uptown, and Interstate 485, which loops around the Charlotte metro area. Because of this, as Realtor with Lifestyle International Realty Scott Bauknight says, residents “have all of Charlotte at their fingertips.” At the same time, thanks to the neighborhood’s namesake Northlake Mall, locals don’t even need to drive more than a few miles to get their shopping and dining done, if they feel like sticking closer to home. Northlake’s location, comfortably away from Charlotte but also right next to major highways and shopping centers, has contributed to an explosion of development within the community. “If you’re looking for an area that’s growing fast, opportunity to get great property value, easy access to a lot of entertainment and proximity to Uptown, it’s one of the best places to live,” says Bauknight, a lifelong resident of Charlotte who has been selling homes for 4 years.
Northlake commuters can easily get around Charlotte with close proximity to the interstate.

Newly minted homes at prices low for Charlotte
Many homes date to the early 2000s, though there have been waves of development since 2020 from major builders such as Meritage Homes and DR Horton. Northlake is a mosaic of these distinct subdivisions, which at the same time share many similarities. “Some communities have amenities like swimming pools, clubhouses and tennis courts,” says Barrie Rojahn, Realtor with Keller Williams who has 2 years of experience selling homes. Most homes follow Colonial Revival and New Traditional designs, with the occasional ranch-style, and most subdivisions have miles of sidewalks. “The price points in that area aren’t extremely high. We see price points easily creeping up in the 400,000s in Charlotte as a whole, whereas you can find homes in the 300,000s in Northlake,” Bauknight says. Single-family houses sell between $300,000 and $425,000, while townhouses go between $250,000 and $400,000.

Northlake students participate in community service
Student groups at Long Creek Elementary include robotics club, coding club and Math Olympiad. The school receives a C-plus rating from Niche, while Francis Bradley Middle is B-plus-rated. Hopewell High earns a B-minus rating. Students who engage in 100 hours of community service are eligible to receive the Titans of Service Award, reflected in a graduation honor cord for when they take home their diplomas. Central Piedmont Community College’s Merancas Campus is about 4 miles north.

At the interchange of two major interstates
Interstate 77 cuts through the neighborhood, heading 9 miles to Uptown, while Interstate 485 forms a ring around The Queen City. “That’s the uniqueness about Charlotte: if you’re by 485, you can be within 45 minutes of everywhere in town,” Bauknight says. Via this interstate, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is 14 miles away. West W. T. Harris Boulevard takes commuters straight to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Charlotte Area Transit System buses are hard to come by this far north, but line 7 goes from Northlake Mall all the way to Charlotte’s city center.

Trails, bald eagles, bowling and more
Long Creek Greenway stretches some 3.5 forested miles and is only growing, with phase 3 of the trail’s development planned to add 2 additional miles. Many Northlake residents are within walking distance of access points. Locals find a whole day’s worth of outdoor activities at Latta Nature Preserve. “That’s an awesome, awesome park that’s right on Mountain Island Lake,” Rojahn says. “It has 16 miles of trails that can be used for horseback riding, running or hiking. You’ve got a couple different points of canoe and kayak access, and you’ve got the nature center which has educational programming about local ecology.” Also on site is the Carolina Raptor Center, a non-profit educational center where visitors can see and learn about birds of prey. “They do a lot of rehab work for the birds, and in years past, they’ve had a couple bald eagles there,” Rojahn says. For indoor recreation, Bauknight recommends Sports Connection, a modern gym and amusement center. “It’s got really nice amenities like a full athletic center with basketball courts and an indoor soccer field with tournaments,” he says. The center also offers arcade games, bowling lanes and laser tag.

A prominent mall and flavorful, multi-sensory restaurants
Over 100 shops and restaurants can be found at the two-story Northlake Mall, along with an AMC cinema. “It’s one of the staples for shopping in the area,” Bauknight says. “On the weekends, you’ll always see a lot more activity there.” Lowe’s, PetSmart and other chains can be found a short drive away. For groceries, two different Food Lions can be found by Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road. It’s not just the grilled lambchops and libations served in crowns that sets Lulabelle’s apart as a unique restaurant and bar. The establishment strives to make eating and drinking into a multi-sensory at every step of the way, from the venue’s low, ambient lighting to the live DJ. For a more casual dining experience, residents can eat at Azteca Mexican Restaurant, which often isn’t lacking for music either, with live mariachi bands performing on weekends. At Boiling Pot, diners can enjoy hot pot, a traditional type of Chinese cuisine similar to stew, which is freshly prepared before their very eyes.
Northlake Mall is at the heart of the area and is a staple shopping destination for Charlotte.

Some local events take place at Northlake Mall such as Mall-O-Ween, where costumed kids can trick-or-treat at retailers. There’s no lack of activity in Huntersville either. On select nights at The Plaza at Birkdale Village, locals can bring blankets and lawn chairs and watch movie screenings and sports games.
