Community pride and renovation efforts shape Englewood’s future
An urban community in south side Chicago, Englewood offers its residents city living near local parks, amenities and public schools. While the neighborhood has experienced its share of issues in recent years, it’s also incredibly resilient and has several community advocacy groups that are striving to improve the area.Realtor April Troope of Tadd Realty, who has worked in Chicago’s south side for nearly 30 years, says the neighborhood is transforming as investors and some new homeowners have begun buying and updating homes more quickly than in the past. “We’ve been renovating our properties to provide better housing here. We’re going block by block to improve it as much as we can,” Troope says. “People should not sleep on Englewood. It’s coming back. It’s a beautiful community.” Local advocacy organizations like The Englewood Arts Collective and the Residents Association of Greater Englewood are also helping to revitalize the area.

Historic homes are priced below the city average
Englewood offers a mix of architecture primarily built in the early 1900s, including many brick and stone rowhomes, bungalows, Craftsman homes and some multifamily buildings. You might also see some unique and historic architecture in the neighborhood, like the Yale Building, a restored Romanesque apartment building that traces its origin to the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. Some of the homes in this area have been restored, renovated and upgraded with modern amenities, while others may need significant improvements. Prices can range from as little as $35,000 for homes that need repairs, while updated homes can cost around $300,000, putting the neighborhood below the city’s median home price of $335,000.

You're also close to the historic Sherman Park, a lush, 60-acre public park designed by John and Frederick Olmsted, the minds behind some of America's most iconic parks.
