A historic Chicago community close to daily comforts

West Town is a lively community that blends historic charm with modern convenience. Housing options range from renovated 19th-century cottages and Chicago Brownstones to newly built condos. Living here brings you close to West Chicago Avenue's vibrant nightlife and popular restaurants. CTA transit options make commuting convenient

Getting around the city is easy with CTA’s Blue, Green and Pink lines all passing through the neighborhood. Each will take you into downtown Chicago, or you can hop on Interstate 90 and drive the 4 miles into the city center. West Town and the surrounding areas are also served by many CTA bus routes. West Chicago and North Ashland avenues offer connections to nearby communities, including Ukrainian Village and the West Loop. For air travel, commercial flights depart from Chicago Midway International Airport, 10 miles away. Medical care is close to home at Ascension Saint Mary Hospital.

Homebuyers will find a wide selection of housing options

The neighborhood’s residential architecture blends old and new. “The neighborhood has a very residential feel,” says Santiago Valdez, local broker with Compass who has more than two decades of experience. “It has some of the oldest buildings in the city, a low density of units and tree-lined streets that contribute to the relaxed environment.” Renovated mid-19th-century workers’ cottages and Chicago Brownstones share grid-like blocks with sleek modern houses and brick townhomes. Majority of residents rent their homes, with condos and townhomes range in price from the low $200,000s for a one-bedroom unit to $2 million for a recently built 3-bedroom unit. Single-family homes follow a similar price range, although they start slightly higher in the mid-$300,000s.

West Chicago Avenue and North Milwaukee Avenue cover dining and retail

West Chicago Avenue borders a portion of the community and is one of the area’s hubs for dining. “There are some shops along Chicago Avenue, but it's known for its good eats,” says Jennifer Evans Piet, a local broker with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate who is a native of nearby Wicker Park. Grab a coffee from West Town Bakery, a popular spot known for its American-style breakfast, baked goods and Dark Matter java. You can also immerse yourself in authentic Ukrainian cuisine at Tryzub Ukrainian Kitchen while taking in views of historic artifacts. This bustling stretch of road also offers a variety of everyday retailers, from large chains like Mariano’s and Walgreens to local staples like Farmers Price Produce and West Town Market. Big-box stores, including Target and Lowe’s, are located along North Milwaukee Avenue near Wicker Park Commons.

Chicago Public Schools serves the community and offers a school choice system, allowing students to attend any school within the district. Nearby schools include the top-rated Mitchell Elementary School and highly rated Ogden International High School. “Mitchell Elementary has been a big pull for homebuyers in recent years,” Evans Piet says. Recreation ranges from local parks to United Center Arena game days

One of the many perks of living in West Town is that almost every home is within walking distance of public green spaces, like Superior and Snowberry parks. Humboldt Park, just west, is a major recreation hub. “It’s a beautiful park with a lake and lots of community activities,” Evans Piet says. “There’s a sledding hill there and food trucks always stop by.” On game day, sports fans head to United Center Arena, a mile away, to cheer on the Bulls and Blackhawks. Other nearby attractions include the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and the Ukrainian National Museum.
