In Cincinnati, there’s a rivalry between East and West. “You’ll often hear sayings like ‘West Side, best side,’” says Doug Spitz, Lead Realtor at DWELL513. “There’s loyalties. If you live here, you tend to stay here forever,” he adds. South Fairmount, which is home to just over 2,000 people, is on the western banks of Mill Creek, less than 4 miles from the heart of downtown. Of Cincinnati’s 52 neighborhoods, it’s one of the more densely packed — the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program, or Section 8, has created affordable housing throughout the community. Public playgrounds and basketball courts are connected via the Lick Run Greenway, which intersects South Fairmount, and corner markets stock pantry staples. In general, Spitz speaks to the culture of kindness throughout the city. “We have a genuinely welcoming and interesting population of people here,” he says. “People are always ready to embrace and say thank you and please, or deliver your coffee with a genuine ‘How’s your day going?’”

Late 19th-century and early 20th-century homes built on steep hills
Some homes in South Fairmount date back to the late 1800s, and most were built prior to 1920. There’s a mix of Italianates, Victorians and bungalows, and cars park in narrow driveways or on the street. “West side is often hillier, and the roads are less direct,” says Real Broker’s Brad Acree, who specializes in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky areas. He notes that people know to slow down on hills after winter snow flurries. Sale prices range from around $35,000 to about $215,00, with the lower end of the spectrum often representing investment properties.

South Fairmount students can enroll in Cincinnati Public Schools
Neighborhood kids can enroll in the Cincinnati Public Schools, which offers open enrollment and is home to various magnet programs. Nearby options include Rees E. Price Academy for prekindergarten through sixth grade and Hughes STEM High School. Both schools earned C grades from Niche, and students at Hughes STEM High School are divided into a preparatory academy for grades seven through nine and a Professional Academy for grades 10, 11 and 12. There are four STEM-centric pathways: Health Sciences, Plant and Animal Sciences, Software Development and Engineering Futures. The high school is next to the University of Cincinnati, and some students pursue dual enrollment classes.

Recreation along the Lick Run Greenway
The City of Cincinnati invested over $100 million in constructing the Lick Run Greenway, a paved trail system surrounded by basketball courts, a splash pad and a playground. The project was completed in 2021 and now hosts community events like scavenger hunts, yoga workshops and cornhole on Earth Day. Historic markings along the trail pay homage to long-ago landmarks like the Fairmount Mills factory and Fairmount Brewery.

Several businesses are located throughout South Fairmount, including laundromats, auto parts stores and Family Dollar for household items. Andreas Grocery, at the corner of Westwood Avenue and Quebec Road, is stocked with dry and canned goods. A taco truck sometimes parks outside. For larger grocery runs, there’s a Walmart Supercenter and Kroger in Western Hills Square.

Cincinnati is less than 4 miles from South Fairmount, and it’s common for residents to rely on the public bus system. There are stops along Harrison Avenue, Westwood Avenue and Queen City Avenue.
