The community is situated along the shores of the Ohio River, and it dates back to the early 19th century. During these years, Walnut Hills became one of the Underground Railroad's key sites; over time, it has evolved into an urban community known for its diverse population. It's a place that's home to more than 30 houses of worship and where residents see remnants of a bygone era all over their community. Late 19th-century Queen Anne homes sit alongside early 20th-century brick builds with porches. Some century-old buildings have now been repurposed into apartment complexes with lower levels that have become home to establishments like Caffe Vivance. Also reflective of the multifaceted nature of this community is Eden Park, a space stretching through multiple neighborhoods. Here, visitors can explore the themed plant houses of Krohn Conservatory, peruse the diverse offerings at the Cincinnati Art Museum or catch a show at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Adding to its appeal is that Walnut Hills is about 3 miles from downtown Cincinnati.

An architectural hub
Those who walk along Walnut Hill's sidewalks can see the whimsical towers and ornamental facades of 19th-century Queen Anne dwellings and the delicate trims of Italianate properties. Quaint turn-of-the-century homes that mesh red brick and fish shingles add character to the streets, and there are also a number of newer developments, including townhouses. Many of these homes sit atop hills and feature staircases that lead to spacious porches. Prices typically range from just upwards of $100,000 for a unit in a 19th-century building to $1.4 million for a newer luxury condo. Some older, single-family homes needing renovation can go for under the $100,000 price point, but the median single-family home price settles at $250,000. However, the community is mainly a renters market. "There's a ton of new apartment complexes going on," says Andrew Kroeger, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Advisors who has experience in the neighborhood. "We're seeing rents skyrocket throughout the area." Given the influx of apartment complexes and older homes without garages, many people here park on the streets.

Eden Park: the Cincinnati Art Museum, Krohn Conservatory and more
At the nearly 220-acre Eden Park, visitors can walk along a path that circles Twin Lake's tranquil expanse and spend some time under pink blossoms at Hinkle Magnolia Garden. This unique park is also home to an art museum, theater and conservatory. At the Cincinnati Art Museum, creatives come to explore unique temporary exhibits, while those wanting to catch a show with friends head to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Steps away from the theater is the Seasongood Pavilion; visitors come here during warmer months to enjoy Shakespeare in the Park. The annual It's Commonly Jazz summer series on Thursdays in August transforms the pavilion into a lively, music-filled gathering. Also popular among many park visitors is the Krohn Conservatory. "It gets decorated according to the season," says Paula Antoniou, who lives nearby and has visited the conservatory many times. "It is especially popular in the summer during the butterfly show, where kids and adults can feed butterflies that fly around fragrant flowers."

Hot dining spots in Walnut Hills
For food out, Kroeger recommends Just Q'in BBQ for its "authentic and good barbeque. It's absolutely phenomenal," he says. Patrons can enjoy a tray complete with brisket and classic sides like mac and cheese. Kroger also suggests Fireside Pizza, where people feast on wood-fired pies and sip ice-cold beer. Those craving Mexican flavors stroll into Gomez Salsa, a spot known for its turtle shell tacos; on warm days, patrons sit at the outdoor picnic table area and sip on margaritas with a view of the vibrant murals surrounding them. For a quick pick-me-up, locals can head to Caffe Vivance to grab a cup of coffee and a sweet treat. Come nighttime, funky melodies fill the air as this space transforms into a jazz lounge. Many of the establishments here are housed in former historic buildings turned flats along McMillian Street, which Kroeger says makes them right "next to all the new development and mixed-use space." For groceries, locals can head to the nearby Kroger location.

From preschool through sixth grade, children here can attend Cincinnati Public Schools’ Frederick Douglass Elementary School, which receives a C-minus rating on Niche. The school boasts the Contemplative Arts and Sciences Program, which has connections with the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and other similar institutions. From seventh grade and beyond, many children here enroll in A-plus-rated Walnut Hills High School. It’s known as one of the best schools in the state and has even received a 2023 National Blue Ribbon Award. Historic places: Harriet Beecher Stow House and century-old churches
Walnut Hills is home to several historic sites, including the Harriet Beecher Stow House. Visitors can learn about Harriet Beecher Stow, an abolitionist and author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" who lived here in the mid-19th century. They can also learn how Irene Bacon transformed the space a century later into the Edgemont Inn, an establishment featured in the Green Book. There are also several historic places of worship here, including the mid-18th-century Gothic Revival Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Church, which houses "Big Joe," a bell that was once the world's largest of its kind. The Church of the Assumption and Walnut Hills Presbyterian Church are also century-old site institutions that reflect Gothic Revival architectural trends. The former has now become The Palomar Cincinnati, a popular event venue, and the latter is no longer operating. Also dating back to the 19th century is the Walnut Hills Cemetery.

Major throughfares here include Gilbert Avenue, Martin Luther King Drive and Interstate 71. Residents can take I-71 for about 3 miles to get to downtown Cincinnati, which is home to major employers like Proctor & Gamble. Locals here can also get to the downtown area by taking Metro's Line 11, which will get them there in just around 20 minutes. What's convenient about Walnut Hill's location is that it is also just about 1.5 miles from the University of Cincinnati via William Howard Taft Road. They can take that same road and Burnet Avenue to the U.C. Medical Center and Cincinnati Children's Hospital, the latter of which the U.S. News & World Report ranks as the country's No. 1 children's hospital. This ideal location means Walnut Hills residents are less than 5 miles from some of the city's major attractions, including the year-round Findlay Market and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. Those wanting to explore other cities can take I-71 for about 15.5 miles to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
