Short North’s full name is the Short North Arts District, fitting for this colorful community in the heart of Columbus. Besides the murals and sculptures decorating the neighborhood, you can find galleries along High Street and a satellite campus of the Columbus Museum of Art. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and galleries a short walk from your front door. Goodale Park is also in the area and is home to some of Columbus’ biggest events. Downtown Columbus and Ohio State University are just over a mile away.

Residences range from Victorian-era homes to contemporary condos
Queen Annes and other Victorian-era styles fill Short North, where homes date back to the mid-1800s. Some of these houses have been converted to multifamily properties. As you get closer to High Street, the neighborhood’s main corridor, you will see more condos and townhouses. “There’s a good mix of older and newer construction,” says Brandon Prewitt, Realtor with Re/Max Metro Plus and a former Short North resident. While some of the newer units lean into contemporary styles, others embrace the red brick aesthetic of the older homes in the area.

Short North has a wide price range and large renter population
Prices in Short North trend higher than most of Columbus, but are on par with neighboring communities like Victorian Village. Single-family homes typically cost between the mid-$400,000s and the high $900,000s. “In the condo and townhome space, I would say there’s a lot of options across many different price points,” Prewitt says. While most prices range from the low $200,000s to the high $500,000s, more luxury units are priced for the high $800,000s to about $1.5 million. There is a large renter population.
Prewitt says that the range in pricing reflects the mix of people living in Short North. “You can have college students all the way up to people who are downsizing out of larger homes and looking to live closer to the activity and the action,” he says. “It’s a good meld of folks.”
Craftsman homes with covered porches are common in the Short North Arts District.

It is a walkable neighborhood, but you need a car for longer distances
Short North is highly walkable, with sidewalks along every street and a crosswalk at every corner of High Street. “In Central Ohio, it’s probably the most walkable neighborhood to coffee shops, bars, restaurants... You name it,” Prewitt says. Because downtown is so close, you can also walk there.
That being said, cars are still helpful for getting around the rest of the city. While there is now a Lucky’s Market in Victorian Village, you generally need to drive a few miles for groceries and other errands. “If you were going to go to Target or go to a big-box store, you’d have to go to one of the suburban neighborhoods like Grandview Heights or Upper Arlington,” Prewitt says. “For that, having a car is a big plus.” The Central Ohio Transit Authority also manages a bus line along High Street.
COTA Line 1 runs along High Street with frequent stops through the Short North Arts District.

There is no shortage of events in Short North, from monthly street festivals to some of Columbus’ largest celebrations. The Gallery Hop is held on the first Saturday of every month. In between visiting the local businesses, you can enjoy live music. Every June, Stonewall Columbus hosts their annual Pride Festival in Goodale Park. This vibrant, weekend-long event is a celebration of community that starts with a march along High Street. The Doo Dah Parade goes through the neighborhood on the Fourth of July, ending in a block party.
Goodale Park is the largest green space in the neighborhood
Besides hosting some of the city’s largest events, Goodale Park is also the oldest public park in Columbus. There’s plenty of open air and walking trails, but you can also find more traditional park amenities like a playground and baseball diamonds. “It’s really just a nice green space in an urban setting,” Prewitt says. Facing the park is The Pizzuti, a satellite campus of the Columbus Museum of Art that highlights contemporary artists. The neighboring Italian Village also has a small park, Italian Village Park, that many residents use.
