Just south of Kessler, below West Davis Street, lies the eclectic Bishop Arts District, which offers trendy food options, nightlife venues, and a celebrated shopping area that is held together by local businesses. "The district has exploded over the last ten years," says Thompson. "If you're going to a bar, you're running into your neighbors, and a lot of shop owners live locally." The district is home to the Kessler Theater, which, after nearly three decades of inactivity, the former movie house reopened in 2010 as a music venue featuring a heavy rotation of famous acts. "There is a huge sense of community in Oak Cliff," Thompson says. "Mardi Gras is the biggest annual event with a 5k on the same day."

Kessler kids may be a part of the Dallas Independent School District. Nearby is Rosemont Lower, educating preschool through third grade and Rosemont Upper, serving fourth through eighth grades. Kessler is well connected with I-30, running along its northern edge, and I-35E to the east.
