As the seat of Wayne County, Detroit is the 13th largest city in the United States and has a population that accounts for approximately half the residents in the state of Michigan. Houses in this area were built predominantly in the first half of the 20th century and have 2 to 3 bedrooms, but apartments and new single-family homes are becoming more common as the population continues to expand. Architectural styles range from classic French Revival and Queen Anne to modern Art Deco and Neo-gothic designs.
The city of Detroit is divided into multiple different subdivisions which are all roughly the same size. In Fort Wayne and Jefferson along the banks of the river, revitalization efforts have increased in recent years to preserve historic architecture and landmarks despite industrial growth. Nearby in downtown Detroit, also known as City Center, residents enjoy a bustling urban atmosphere with plenty of restaurants and entertainment. Art Center and Medical Center, however, provide easy freeway access and clean, walkable streets in a culturally diverse neighborhood. Sherwood Forest and Palmer Woods are situated just above Palmer Park, where residents can take a leisurely hike along scenic forest trails and still be close to shopping and other local amenities.
Industries that are strongly represented in the city of Detroit are manufacturing and finance, but healthcare and technology also support a large portion of the economy in this region. This is why Detroit Medical Center and the Henry Ford Health System are both top employers in the city. In addition, Detroit is currently home to three Fortune 500 companies and boasts more than 80,000 employees that work in the downtown area alone. Other major employers in the city at this time include General Motors, Quicken Loans and Ally Financial, but retail and restaurant services are becoming more popular throughout Midtown north of the city's central business district.
