A small Detroit suburb with historic homes and new parks
The small neighborhood of Greenfield is about 13 miles from downtown Detroit and features three parks and two schools. Rows of mid-century brick bungalows create solid, stable homes for first-time homebuyers or long-time neighborhood residents. Bisected by Pembroke Avenue, Greenfield has access to major roads like Southfield Freeway, the James Couzens Freeway and 7 Mile Road, which has several restaurants and shops. “Greenfield is a great starter area for homebuyers. This makes it popular with young couples and families who want a stable starter home,” says Enrico Johnson, broker-owner of Prestige Realty Services, who was raised in the area, still lives there, and has been selling nearby homes since 2007. Students attend schools within the Detroit Public Schools Community School District, graded an overall C on Niche, and Wayne County Community College is less than 2 miles south of Greenfield. The nearest Meijer is down on Grand River Avenue, about 4 miles away.

Detroit-style brick bungalows from the 1940s and 1950s
Homes in Greenfield can be dated back to the 1940s and 1950s during the segregation era of Detroit’s history. Because these single-family homes are all very similar-looking brick bungalows, a series of personalized iron-framed storm doors help distinguish homeowners from their neighbors. Greenfield is organized in a neat grid pattern, and most houses have porticos over the front doors, small porches and fenced yards with detached garages placed out back. “When people are looking for properties, they like the fact that these brick bungalows are such solid, stable homes. Most are from the 1950s and aren’t too pricey,” Johnson says. Greenfield houses often cost between $50,000 and $150,000. A few are boarded up, but investors looking to flip or customize a build may find good bones beneath, as several homes have gone through renovations in the last five years. Several of Greenfield's homes are rental properties, popular among community college students, couples or those looking for a temporary place to stay.

DDOT Detroit buses and access to downtown
Residents can get to downtown Detroit via the M-10 Highway in about 13 miles or 20 minutes, depending on the time of day and concentration of traffic. The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, for international and domestic flights, is about 20 miles away via M-39 South. For those who prefer public transportation, the DDOT Detroit bus system has several stops along 8 Mile, 7 Mile and Greenfield Road. Buses can take riders into the city or down to the community college. For emergencies or checkups, Henry Ford Hospital is about 10 miles southeast.

Detroit Public Schools Community School District
Greenfield students may first attend Bow Elementary-Middle School, right in the neighborhood's heart, for kindergarten through eighth grade. Rated a C-minus on Niche, Bow offers several clubs and programs such as a robotics club, flag football team and a performing arts program with music, dance and vocal opportunities. Students can then move on to Henry Ford High School, which also earns a C-minus. The high school’s slogan is “Students Rise. We all rise.” They support their students by offering honors classes and industry certification programs to help them jumpstart their careers. They also have unique extracurriculars, including Redefining Beauty Inc., which helps young women gain confidence and leadership skills. Wayne County Community College is a two-year institution just south of the neighborhood and is graded an overall C on Niche.

Shop, dine and dance on 7 Mile Road
“There are a few classic Detroit bars and carry-out restaurants nearby,” Johnson says, such as 7 Mile Road’s Coney Island restaurants, bars and smoke shops. Sauce Bar, also known as The Godfather, is a nightlife bar with a large outdoor patio with music playing during warm evenings and food like turkey wings and catfish dinners. Four miles southwest is the nearest Meijer on Grand River Avenue, which is great for large grocery hauls. Also on Grand River Avenue is Maty’s Cuisine, which serves West African fare. The Sweet Potato Sensations bakery is down the road, offering its famous sweet potato cookies and homemade fried chicken. Locals can run fast errands at the Family Dollar on the corner of Greenfield Road and 7 Mile.

New Greenfield parks overtake old lots for community gatherings
Parks in Greenfield are close to most homes, providing wide-open gathering spaces for families or organizations. Alice Gorham Park, next to Pembroke Academy, has a large green field for pick-up baseball or soccer games. Several tables and benches surround the two small playgrounds and the basketball court. The Viola Liuzzo Playground is named after the NAACP activist and now has tennis courts and a large playground for residents to enjoy any time. Adults can utilize the park’s outdoor workout equipment to boost their exercise routines. Once an empty field in 2019, the Fargo-Oakfield Playground now has swings and play structures, a soccer field and walking paths.
