Why Live in Berino

Berino is a bedroom and farming community about halfway between Las Cruces, New Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. Homes rest along a compact grid of streets in the center. From there, dairy farms and pecan orchards stretch outward over the fertile Rio Grande floodplain. “Berino is located really well for jobs in El Paso or Las Cruces,” says Eli Berger, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Legacy Elite, a third-generation Las Cruces resident. “People that live there are hard workers, and they really take care of each other.” Tall pine trees, stone walls and chain-link fences provide a sense of privacy for homeowners. There are a few older adobe residences, several manufactured homes and some stucco-sided ranch-style houses. The median lot size is just over a quarter acre, which gives residents some room to “spread their wings,” Berger says. “You don’t have the city restrictions — some people have horses, chickens or pet goats.” Not many listings come on the market, but recent sales have ranged between $130,000 and $215,000. Berino has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, compared to 4 nationally. The Gadsden Independent School District serves the community, and it earns a B-minus on Niche.
