Ysleta del Sur Pueblo in the Lower Valley
In the Pueblo Revolt against the Spaniards in the late 17th century, the Southern Tigua people were forced from their ancestral lands in modern-day New Mexico, eventually settling in El Paso’s Lower Valley. The Tigua Tribe — also known as Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, with Ysleta translating to “little island” — became one of three tribes in Texas to achieve federal recognition. Today, the Ysleta settlement is regarded as the oldest settlement within Texas’s current boundaries. Urban development has brought El Paso right to its doorstep. The southern segment of Loop 375, a major state highway, now cuts through the area on its circuit around the city. While the Tribe is a significant presence in the community and arguably its defining factor, tribe members aren’t the only people who call this place home. “It has a strong Spanish and Mexican influence, being right on the U.S.-Mexico border,” says Evaristo Cruz, director of community development for Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. “In fact, from one of our reservations, you can see the border fence.”
Given Ysleta's long history, the area features a mix of older, historic homes.
Ysleta is a vibrant neighborhood that represents El Paso’s blend of culture and influence.

The Ysleta Mission on Zaragoza Road
The Ysleta Mission was established in the late 17th century, making it the oldest continuously active parish in Texas. Though the church has swapped locations a few times over the centuries, the current adobe structure, with its gleaming domed turret, is one of Ysleta's most eye-catching features. Tourists explore the area as part of the El Paso Mission Trail, which also includes the Socorro Mission and the San Elizario Presidio. The church is now owned by the Catholic Diocese of El Paso, but the Tigua are still closely associated with the mission and observe the feast day of their patron saint, Anthony of Padua, every year on June 13th. “The feast day does recognize specific saints, but it’s also a time to have members come in and participate,” Cruz says.
The Ysleta Mission was built around 1680 and is the oldest active mission in Texas.

Contemporary homes on small lots in an industrial area
The area closest to the Mexican border is primarily industrial. Most homes in the neighborhood are near the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo near South Zaragoza Road or clustered in the southeastern corner near the Socorro suburb. Single-story contemporary homes, snout houses and duplexes are the predominant styles. Compact lot sizes and decorative fencing give the neighborhood a close-knit vibe, but the area is too large to be walkable, even with paved sidewalks bordering many of the residential streets. Buyers can expect to spend $150,000 to $400,000 for a single-family home or $300,000 to $400,000 for a duplex unit. Within the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo — or "the Pueblo" — are two reservations that include around 400 homes, where citizens and registered members of the tribal community dwell. “They’ve all either found familial ties to be admitted as members of the Tribe or have been born in the community,” Cruz says. Homes in the Pueblo are under the jurisdiction of the Tribal Council, which governs by tribal code and oral tradition.

Pools and puppy splash pads at Pavo Real Recreation Center
The Pavo Real Recreation Center and neighboring facilities appeal to various ages and interests. The multicolored splash pad breaks free from the standard model with an oversized bucket that periodically drenches young visitors lined up for the two waterslides. The adjacent K-9 Agent Bulder Memorial Dog Splash Park allows pups to romp around off-leash in the spray from a fire-hydrant-shaped water feature. More wet and wild fun can be had at the community pool next to the recreation center, which offers a weight room with exercise equipment, pool and ping-pong tables, and a boxing ring. On the southern side of Highway 375, marksmen and archers hone their skills at El Paso Skeet & Trap Club. The facility is open to the public and includes a clubhouse with a full-service kitchen, outdoor grills and picnic tables.
Americas Plaza offers retail therapy near the border
Near the Texas 375 Loop, America’s Plaza shopping mall serves up a feast of fast-food chains and retail outlets. Walmart Supercenter is a convenient grocery spot right across the street. On Socorro Road in the southern section of the neighborhood, the pastry cases at Bowie Bakery and Mexican candies at Dulcelandia satisfy the urge for something sweet. Cima Hardware stocks lawn and garden tools, dust and pollen filters and other household supplies.
Rainbow Fountain provides locals with authentic cultural dishes from morning till evening.

Sun Metro buses looping around El Paso
The Texas 375 Loop forms a loose ring around El Paso and cuts through the center of Ysleta. It can be used to access the Ysleta-Zaragoza Bridge for the 8-mile trip over the border to Ciudad Juárez or to connect to Interstate 10, about 2 miles west. Warehouses and industrial facilities dominate the landscape south of the 375 Loop near the Mexican border. From Ysleta, it’s about 12 miles to El Paso International Airport and 14 miles to downtown El Paso. Buses in the Sun Metro system provide service to the area from several stops, many on Alameda Avenue. University Medical Center Ysleta is the closest hospital, about 2 miles away on the other side of South Zaragoza Road.
