The O’Shea Keleher neighborhood in east El Paso is home to more than 7,000 people. The neighborhood is named for Helen O'Shea Keleher, who in the early 1900s ran what was then referred to as a “poor farm” in the area, providing shelter and care for homeless adults and orphaned children. Today, it is a quiet neighborhood with more than 2,400 homes that were built in the 1980s and 1990s. It is surrounded by retail and other amenities. Many of the brick, traditional and ranch-style homes are between 1,200 and 2,000 square feet and have garages. Prices range from $190,000 to $300,000. Because of El Paso’s hot, dry climate, many homes don't have lawns but instead use alternative landscaping like gravel or rocks. “It’s called xeriscaping,” says Charles Clark, broker with Clark Brothers Real Estate. “Desert doesn’t really grow a whole lot; the heat is too intense."
