Penrose is a residential neighborhood in El Paso’s Lower Valley. Situated between Interstate 10 and the Mexico border, the area is characterized by ranch-style homes built in the 1970s with modest lots and stone or chain-link fencing. Nearly a third of residents rent apartments from Canyon Square Village or one of 65 homesites within the Escondido Mobile Home Park. Both Mission Valley Elementary and Del Valle Middle are located within the neighborhood, and Del Valle High School offers advanced placement courses for Spanish literature, human geography and studio art. There’s a major shopping corridor by the intersection of North Loop Drive and North Zaragoza Road with businesses such as the El Super grocery store, Family Dollar, CVS and Economy Wholesale Grocers. There are also a few locally owned Mexican restaurants such as Jefita’s Tamales and El Atoron. Cracked asphalt roads and sidewalks are prevalent throughout the community, and Sun Metro buses provide public transportation to El Paso International Airport. Loop 375 leads 12 miles west toward Downtown El Paso. There are several playgrounds and picnic tables at Pueblo Viejo Park, while Little League games are held at Blackie Chesher Park. Kids enjoy swimming at the William W. Cowan Aquatic Center, and there are over 100 miles of hiking and biking trails at Franklin Mountains State Park.
