The suburban roads of Sandy Creek lead from 20th-century homes to commercial spaces and busy thoroughfares in El Paso. The community, east of downtown, is a part of the city’s Mission Valley area. “The Lower Valley is how we refer to it,” says Linda Bastraw, an El Paso native who is also the broker and owner of Linda Bastraw Realty, LLC. “That region has lots of families that have been here for many years, some for generations.” According to Bastraw, people also move here for the location. “It’s close to everything. Malls, restaurants, everything, because of the location,” she says. The U.S.-Mexico border is 12 miles away, and much of the community is Spanish-speaking. The majority of Sandy Creek residents own their homes, which are usually made of stucco or brick. The Visita Hill subdivision is popular for its various home styles, including Spanish Mission influences, ranch styles and two-story dwellings from the late 20th century. The Sandy Creek housing development, in the northern section, has smaller ranch-style homes. Residences spanning 2,000 square feet or more range in price between $300,000 and $500,000.
