Why Live in Tejas

The small neighborhood of Tejas in south El Paso developed throughout the 1950s, much of it before the construction of Interstate 10. Today, that highway runs along the neighborhood’s north side. “That area was the heart of El Paso when the interstate came in,” says Albert Aguilar of Mary Aguilar Realtors. “It’s very convenient and still popular. I-10 runs through the middle of El Paso, so being near a freeway doesn’t affect the neighborhood. It’s kind of the norm for E Paso. It actually makes it easier to get around.” Because most of the homes in Tejas were built by the mid-1950s, they are smaller than the contemporary homes found in other areas of the city. The simple, traditional designs incorporate regional architectural elements such as flat or low-angle roofs. “It’s an established, good neighborhood,” Aguilar says. “It’s older, but nice.” Water runoff is not a major concern in the city’s arid, high-desert climate.
