Why Live in Ely
The small city of Ely was originally founded in the 1870s as a stagecoach stop. Copper was discovered nearby in 1906, and it has been a defining part of the community ever since. Along with the Ely State Prison, the Robinson Mine is one of the area’s largest employers. “People come from all over the nation to work here,” says Vince Fleischman, a local real estate agent with Key Realty who also rents out properties in Ely. “There are high-paying jobs here, and we don’t have enough people to fill the positions.” Although it sits hundreds of miles from any major metro area, the town of 4,000 also serves as the county seat for White Pine County. Cottages built in the early 1900s through the 1950s sit on fenced, grassy or gravel lots, lining Ely’s neatly gridded streets. Ranch-style homes were added throughout the 1950s and ’60s, with a second wave in the ’80s and ’90s. Prices range from $40,000 to $370,000, largely depending on condition. More recent construction on large lots can fetch between $250,000 and $550,000. Meanwhile, the rural northern side of the community is dotted with manufactured homes from the 1990s and 2000s, with prices ranging from $250,000 to $400,000. Coming on
