For groceries and supplies, head to Reid Marketplace for big-box stores like Walmart and PetSmart, and at the Spanish supermarket Mariana’s, residents will find homemade corn tortillas, Mexican sweet breads, made-to-order aquas frescas and other specialty items. While nightlife and eclectic dining are its bread and butter, the neighborhood’s arts scene is just as lively and vibrant as the Strip. Free to the public, the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art, located on the UNLV campus, features artworks of historically marginalized populations. The university’s main library, Lied Library, is a grand $58 million 300,000-square-foot fixture towering five stories high in the middle of campus and houses a collection of over 1 million volumes. The Atomic Museum allows visitors a deep dive into the Manhattan Project and the country’s nuclear past through thousands of rare photographs, artifacts and one-of-kind scientific collections.
UNLV has sports fans covered, too. Catch a UNLV Rebels football game at Allegiant Stadium or the Lady Rebels women’s basketball team at Cox Pavilion. This indoor pavilion, also home to the National Basketball Association Summer League, is connected to the Thomas & Mack Center, which hosts big-name events like Disney on Ice, the Harlem Globetrotters and championship boxing.

Quaint parks to trails and conservation preserves
Although there aren’t many expansive green spaces in the University District, three small parks offer plenty of outdoor recreation. Molasky Family Park offers a playground, soccer field and off-leash dog park. Paradise Vista Park entices on summer days with a shaded playground and picnic area. Golfers will delight in the neighborhood’s offerings, with three championship courses within just a few blocks, including Wynn Golf Club and Las Vegas National Golf Course.
In the shadow of Harry Reid International Airport sits the 20-acre Siegfried & Roy Park, which features a playground, splash pad, picnic gazebos and two tennis courts. A spiraling sculpture by artist Wayne Littlejohn, Dream Machine, anchors the park and is visible from adjacent roads. Hikers and mountain bikers can hop on the 8-mile Flamingo Arroyo Trail, only 4 miles from the neighborhood, to experience desert terrain and art sculptures. And just 7 miles away lies the Whitney Mesa Nature Preserve, a 6-acre oasis of rugged terrain and panoramic views of Henderson. The 48,000-acre Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area is only a 12-mile drive from the University District for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a deeper dive into nature.

High-rise luxury condos, student apartments and pueblo homes
The University District offers a broad mix of modern high-rise condos, more modest low-rise apartments and vintage single-family homes. Along The Strip, there's a mix of condos, some in gated communities with all the amenities and most with modern updates. East of The Strip, within sight of UNLV and Harry Reid International Airport, single-story brick or pueblo-style homes on tree-lined cul-de-sacs beckon buyers. Most single-family homes were built in the late 1970s and range from $410,000 to $725,000. Hi-rise condos, like those in the luxury Wimbledon 10-story Tower, start at $190,000 for a two-bedroom, and most other condos and townhouses start around $230,000 and top out a little over $322,000. Vast California ranch-style homes boast yards an acre or larger, suitable for tennis courts or pools. Smaller homes built a little later sit on tidy, smaller lots. As far as apartments go, the University District is made up of two communities – The Degree and Legacy LV, the former offering luxury apartments and the latter providing more affordable, spacious apartments. Both communities are less than 1 mile from campus, near bus routes and close to shops and restaurants. As of April 2024, the average apartment rent in the University District is $834 for a studio and $1,001 for a one-bedroom.

The university puts on most events, from internship career fairs to sporting events year-round, concerts and dance performances at its Performing Arts Center, and multicultural nights.
Tough on crime
The University District has a CAP Index Crime Score of 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. Its score for robbery is 8, and the university was the site of a mass shooting in December 2023. University police services patrol the area, and since this tragic event, UNLV has stepped up its initiatives with text alerts, video trainings, enhanced door locks and an alert system through the RebelSAFE smartphone app. In January 2024, the campus launched the Rebel Recovery Program, which guides campus operations, wellness services, training opportunities and safety initiatives. The university also holds regular workshops and sessions on safety and navigating trauma in the aftermath of a traumatic event.
Driving around the District
State Routes 562 and 595 and Interstates 215 and 15 get residents conveniently around the region, including the Vegas Strip and Harry Reid International Airport, both just 2 miles away. RTC Transit operates buses running up and down The Strip, offering tourists and residents alike one of the safest and most inexpensive ways to get around. The University District is also home to Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center — a leader in cardiac care.
