North Country Club is one of several developments by Guthrie May, an Evansville native who set out to solve the housing shortage in the area after World War II. Gayl Killough, President of the North Country Club Neighborhood Association, says her parents were among the first to buy a house in the neighborhood. “They actually chose it off of a model, but then they had to wait at least six months to be able to get the house,” she says. May worked with developers to start North Park Shopping Center and the Holy Redeemer Church. “They literally planned a neighborhood in a very strategic way,” Killough says. “I think that’s one reason North Park still is successful today.
