Nestled among the mountains of western North Carolina, Zirconia started as a sparsely populated community until a local mining rush arrived in the 1870s. The extraction of Zircon, a type of gemstone, was heavily prevalent as Thomas Edison found the mineral useful in his early light bulbs, and the activity gave the community its name. Mining stopped in the 1900s, and the area has since become a haven for outdoor attractions, camps and rural living. Homes in Zirconia can range from $300,000 to $700,000, but some properties can reach above $1 million. Ranch-styles, bungalows and New Traditional homes are the most common.
