Fort Walton Beach is a year-round fishing and beach resort community in Okaloosa County, Florida. There are a lot of delightful two bedroom units ranging from modest to moderately high prices. Most of these properties find themselves right up against the beach. Whether it’s a nice little home with a pool or one of the cute apartment rooms, there is something for just about everybody.
As you look at potential homes in Fort Walton Beach there will be a variety of neighborhoods to consider. Here are some descriptions of a few of the areas where places are available. Ocean City is a suburb and coastal neighborhood directly north of Cinco Bayou. The homes here include medium sized houses and some smaller apartment units in complexes and high-rises. Many of the places here were built between 1940 and 1969. The City Center neighborhood comes right up to the Gulf, though it is shielded from larger swells by Okaloosa Island. There are mainly small and medium sized homes and apartments around here. Okaloosa Island is a resort area and it is also home to the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park. Just across the Brooks Bridge, it is only minutes away from City Center. Further north, past Ocean City, is Wright, another medium-priced neighborhood.
The primary economic activity of Fort Walton Beach involves the military presence there. It is home to the Headquarters of the Airforce Special Operations Command, the 1st Special Operations Wing, and the Joint Special Operations University. The presence of the large resort area on Okaloosa Island and the attractions and theme parks make Fort Walton Beach a tourism-focused economy as well. The tourist activity is primarily seasonal. Year-round, the biggest employer is the Eglin Air Force Base. Hurlburt Field, another Air Force Base, is the second biggest employer. Those two employers provide far more jobs than all the other top ten employers combined. Okaloosa County School District is the third largest employer.
