Why Live in Freehold
Over two centuries ago, British and American troops clashed at the Battle of Monmouth 3 miles outside of Freehold’s downtown. Every June, reenactors gather at Monmouth Battlefield State Park to recreate the event; there are cannon drills, mounted horse demonstrations and the steady beat of snare drums. “It’s always super hot,” says Freehold Public Library Director Kathy Mulholland, noting that the battle is particularly famous for its connection to Molly Pitcher, a Revolutionary War legend and “maybe a composite of four different women.” But Pitcher isn’t the only local hero; Freehold Borough is also the hometown of Bruce Springsteen. “When he sings the song ‘My Hometown,’ this is what he’s talking about. That’s a big draw for people from all over the world,” says Mulholland. Fans of the singer flock to Monmouth County each year, and there’s even a Springsteen museum in the works downtown. “The Boss” himself also makes an appearance from time to time, stopping inside his favorite restaurants like Roberto’s, an old-school diner on Main Street. “There’s some essence of Bruce everywhere in town. People try to be chill when he comes,” says Mulholland. According to local Realtor
