Why Live in Highland

Highland is a Sullivan County town on the Delaware River and the Pennsylvania border. The rural area is made up of small hamlets and stretches of countryside dotted with lakes and ponds. Midcentury ranch-style homes, cottages, log cabins and A-frames are common housing styles. Home prices start in the lower $100,000s, but lakefront estates in gated communities sell in the lower $900,000s. Property taxes are high, and a lot of people are seasonal residents who rent out their homes on platforms like Airbnb when they're not around. Those who do live here year-round usually work in nearby towns like Monticello, Port Jervis or Matamoras. Outdoor activities are a huge part of life, and campgrounds, bird-watching and rafting companies can be found along the river. The hamlets of Barryville and Eldred have restaurants, bars and groceries at Peck's. Port Jervis is about half an hour away with more dining spots, transportation options and medical services at Bon Secours Community Hospital. Kids go to school in the Eldred Central School District, starting at Mackenzie Elementary in nearby Glen Spey and moving to Eldred Junior/Senior High School right in town. Flooding isn't usually an issue, despite the town's riverside location and numerous lakes.
