Mystical blend of valley serenity, educational excellence and cultural gems

Home to the ancient Manoa Falls, cherished as a place of spiritual power and renewal, and known as the "valley of rainbows," the Manoa neighborhood offers a quilt of history, scenery and innovation. Its forested inland watershed reserve creates what locals call "Manoa mist," giving the neighborhood an atmosphere that differs from busy downtown Honolulu or sunny Waikiki.Residents enjoy scaling the falls as somewhat of a rite of passage, and a continual source of inspiration. Says Pam Maeda, Certified Residential Specialist and top producer with Marcus Realty, who attended high school in Manoa, "If I could have a home anywhere, it would be in Manoa. But I'm happily married to a surfer who needs the shore. So, someone looking specifically for sunny beach weather won't find it here. Manoa gives you a seasonal mainland feel, cooler temps and glorious misty mornings."Homes in this elongated slice of valley beauty vary from high-rise condos near Lunalilo Freeway, or H-1, to single-family homes surrounding the oldest and largest campus of the University of Hawaii. In late 2023, UHM opened the groundbreaking Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs known as RISE. Manoa's heart also holds the treasured Manoa Chinese Cemetery, intentionally designed in 1851 to face the ocean with mountains behind, honoring a traditional geomantic principle for creating perfect rest.Since the 1980s, Manoa Marketplace has been the neighborhood's central dining and shopping hub, and locals can bike, drive or hop on public transit to reach nearby marinas, beaches and golf courses. In southernmost Manoa, H-1 offers easy access to the rest of Oahu.

Community Garden, Manoa Falls and Manoa Heritage Center

There's a sense of togetherness in Manoa District Park, where resident green thumbs cultivate plots at the community garden and kids enjoy the lighted basketball court and playground. To retreat deep into nature, hikers trek through a rainforest of towering foliage on the Manoa Falls Trail, where stunning mountain views offer refreshment. One of the neighborhood's cultural gems is the Manoa Heritage Center, offering locals access to an ancient stone heiau, or place of worship, and a garden where endangered and rare native plants are thriving.

Condos near H-1 and multi-million-dollar valley homes

Manoa's streetscapes curving up the valley are lush with trees and landscaping. Many single-family midcentury residences that range from $2.6 million to $4.3 million hold their classic charm or have been beautifully renovated. Homes constructed in 2020 or newer range from $2 million to $3 million, while condos concentrate closer to H-1, asking between $250,000 and $450,000. Maeda adds, "Manoa's lots and homes were well-made. Some are more bougie, and others built for locals who worked in Palolo are more modest. But overall, your equitable value in Manoa is higher because they're not tract homes. You can live in an exclusive gated community or in a cozy three-bedroom right next to a $3 million home."

Central Manoa Marketplace, Farmers Market and Off the Hook Poke

In addition to a Safeway and Long's right in the neighborhood's Manoa Marketplace, Maeda explains, "The Manoa Farmers Market right next to Safeway is super popular for fresh produce. Everything's convenient here; the post office, bakeries, all the essentials. But you'll have to drive 6 or 7 miles to shop at Costco." Morning Glass on East Manoa Road is a favorite for coffee and breakfast, and locals line up for Kilauea Fire poke bowls at Off the Hook Poke Market. For sweet treats, Choco le'a creates fresh locally made chocolates.

Easy H-1 to town and The Bus public transit

Southern Manoa borders the H-1 for quick access to downtown Honolulu and other parts of Oahu, and the Daniel K. Inouye Airport is around 9 miles from central Palolo. Hawaii's award-winning The Bus transit system in Manoa carries locals all around the area, from UHM to Aloha Stadium to Honolulu Zoo and Ala Moana Regional Beach Park. In 2024, The Bus is planning to expand, thanks to a $20 million Federal Transit Administration grant awarded in 2023 to add new electric buses.
