Like the famous Italian city, Rome, Ohio was named for its seven hilltops. But it's better known for being the place of origin for the Rome Beauty apple. First planted on the banks of the Ohio River in 1817, the fruit is known for its shiny red skin and popularity amongst bakers. Although the original tree is long gone, its descendants still bear fruit in local orchards. And like its native fruit, Rome itself has been growing for decades. This suburban riverside area has one of the largest stocks of newer homes anywhere around Huntington, but it also offers many events, school programs and other ways to be part of a community with deep roots.
