Near the border of Missouri and Kansas, not far from popular cities like Topeka and Lawrence, sitsKansas City. Founded as a central port on the Missouri River in the 1830s, it is now the largest city in the Missouri and the state’s second largest metropolitan area. There’s a wide diversity in the area’s real estate, with elegant condos and townhomes in the urban areas and 3- and 4-bedroom houses in the outlying suburbs.
Downtown Kansas City is found where the Kansas and Missouri Rivers meet, and the metropolitan area actually straddles the two states. There are hundreds of different and diverse neighborhoods within the city, many with a rich history. The 18th and Vine Historical District is considered the birthplace of Kansas City Jazz and Kansas City Blues. The central districts are rich with restaurants and nightlife, while areas to the south of town offer more in the way of quiet neighborhoods. Leawood is a popular suburb south of downtown, with single-family, mid-century homes and expansive city parks. Craft homes are also popular in the suburban areas like Prairie Village, just on the Kansas side of the state line. Country Club Plaza was one of the first suburban shopping centers opened in the United States and the surrounding district includes several neighborhoods and many large, historic homes.
The top employer in this metropolis is the federal government, as Kansas City is one of a handful of regional office cities for the U.S. government. Many of the city’s residence are employed in the public sector, while the largest tech company in the area is the Cerner Corporation, a global supplier of health information technology. Ford Motor Company also has a large manufacturing facility in Kansas City, employing only slightly fewer residents than the nearby General Motors Fairfax Assembly Plant. With ample farmland in both Kansas and Missouri, a number of agriculture companies operate out of Kansas City, including Dairy Farmers of America.
