Crossroads is an area that’s crawling with attractions

Crossroads is where art, entertainment and dining intersect near Kansas City ’s downtown. Multicolored murals brighten blocks lined with bars, restaurants, art galleries and event spaces. A collection of condos offers modern living with rustic character, close to all of the action. And expansions to the KC Streetcar system can help you reach other parts of the city via stations that are steps from home.

A dense mix of eateries, galleries and entertainment to explore

You could throw a rock just about anywhere in Crossroads and hit a popular place to eat or grab a drink. “There’s just so much going on in terms of that whole area,” says local Realtor Bob Washburn, who’s with Compass Real Estate and has about a dozen years of experience in the industry. There are spots to explore on seemingly every block, including:

  • Farina, where the duck meatballs are a popular item and whose executive chef, Michael Smith, won a James Beard award for best chef in the Midwest
  • Novel Restaurant, which is known for its ravioli and its 50-foot-long mosaic art piece in the dining room
  • 1587 Prime, a steakhouse established by Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce
  • Grünauer, a spot that specializes in Central European fare, including spätzle and goulash
  • Oak & Steel, where there's a long list of beers, wines and whiskeys to choose from
Oak & Steel is around the corner from the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, a building that's hard to miss with its towering glass windows and accordion-like side panels, which benefit the building’s acoustics. The facility hosts well over 300 shows and other events every year, including concerts, plays, comedy shows and even public yoga sessions. Spots like Blue Gallery and The Bunker Center for the Arts host exhibitions to peruse, while RAYGUN and Bonk Supply are eclectic places to shop for clothing and more. There’s also a Dollar General Express, also known as DGX, for grocery items.

Loft condos are common in Crossroads

Condos and apartments dominate the housing selection in the Crossroads area, where over 80% of residents are renters. Many of the condo units available for purchase are loft-style options, where exposed brick and other industrial touches combine with modern appliances. The spaces range from around 700 square feet to well over 2,000 square feet. “There are high-end as well as affordable, medium-priced condos,” Washburn says. “Which, obviously, that’s a draw in terms of the mix of ages.” Units are priced from the upper $200,000s to the upper $600,000s in most cases, with monthly HOA fees between $400 and $500. Some offer garage parking, too.

Where Crossroads residents can find green space and recreation

While Crossroads is predominantly urban, the neighborhood has spots for nature lovers, too. The 18 Broadway Urban Garden features vegetables, fruits and herbs, and is tended to by employees from the nearby company Dialectic Engineering. The food contributes to a community kitchen in the city. There’s also 5 acres of public green space around the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. More opportunity for outdoor recreation is available just south of Crossroads at the 130-acre Penn Valley Park, where amenities include:

  • A 2-mile trail
  • An off-leash dog park
  • Basketball and tennis courts
  • A skate spark
  • The Penn Valley Lake, which is open to fishing

An elementary school is within walking distance for some

Kids in this area can enter the Kansas City Public Schools district. The neighborhood is zoned for schools including Primitivo Garcia Elementary School, which is about a half-mile away and includes prekindergarten through sixth grade. Students and their families aren’t necessarily limited to assigned schools; they can apply to specialized magnet schools, though placement is not guaranteed and depends on eligibility, space and a lottery.

Students in Crossroads may go to Northeast High School for grades 9 through 12.

Streetcar access and walkability make getting around easy

The city’s KC Streetcar system cuts right through the middle of Crossroads, along Main Street. There are two stops in the neighborhood: Kauffman Center and Crossroads. An extension that opened in 2025 added over 3 miles to the line, allowing riders to travel south to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus. “It’s been a huge success,” Washburn says. You can also take the streetcar north, close to the Missouri Riverfront. Otherwise, Crossroads' tightly organized layout makes it convenient to get around on foot or by bike. There’s extra foot traffic in the area on the first Friday of each month for the neighborhood’s First Friday in the Crossroads event. The event takes place year-round and highlights the area’s art galleries, restaurants and other businesses. Some spots offer extended hours and specials, and there’s a food truck plaza and an Art Alley with vendors on first Fridays from May through October.
