A friendly, central suburb in Kentwood
Ridgebrook highlights why Kentwood is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state. Residents of this quiet suburb enjoy walkable streets, friendly neighbors and a central location. “I like it here, and I like all my neighbors,” says John Lewis, owner of a local business, John’s Windshield Repair, and a Ridgebrook resident of 24 years. “I would call it a quiet but friendly neighborhood. Traffic is never bad. It’s in a great location with Kalamazoo, Muskegon and Lansing areas an hour's drive away.” Ridgebrook is home to schools, a park and a small shopping area, putting most suburban conveniences within arm’s reach.

Late midcentury charm along quiet streets
While each winding street of Ridgebrook isn’t lined by a sidewalk, the roads are quiet enough for residents to enjoy carefree strolls. Even on the neighborhood’s outskirts, mature trees buffer the noise from higher trafficked roads. Some of Ridgebrook's houses date back to the 1950s, but for the most part, these ranch-style and split-level homes cropped up between the ‘60s and ‘70s. This is reflected in the area’s simple, charming, homey midcentury architecture and common features like driveways and two-car garages. That said, new construction properties are joining the neighborhood, introducing the New Traditional style to Ridgebrook. List prices start around $230,000 for, say, a three-bedroom, two-bathroom ‘50s charmer. Prices cap at about $500,000, which is in the ballpark for a larger newly constructed home with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. As for multifamily properties, apartment complexes lie south of 60th Street.

Glenwood Elementary and Brookwood Elementary
Served by Kentwood Public Schools, Ridgebrook has two elementary schools right in the neighborhood. On the west side, and attended by students living on the west side, is Glenwood Elementary, rated with a B-plus on Niche. Attended by east-side students and located on the neighborhood’s east side is Brookwood Elementary, rated B on Niche. Academic pathways meet at Valleywood Middle School, rated C-plus on Niche, before students move on to East Kentwood Freshman Campus for ninth grade, rated B on Niche. Their last stop on this K-12 line is East Kentwood High. This high school is ranked No. 5 on Niche’s list of standout high schools in Michigan and has an A rating. Students here can enrich their school days with a variety of extracurriculars, such as team sports like football and volleyball, and clubs for various interests like graphic design, skiing and e-sports.

Jaycee Park
“A lot of well-maintained parks are close by for cookouts and playgrounds or dog walks,” Lewis says. “There are some great golf courses around, and a very nice municipal course is 10 minutes away.” In the center of Ridgebrook is Jaycee Park, a heavily wooded community green space with plentiful outdoor activities. It’s not only a great place to stop for a picnic, but it features three different playgrounds and a challenging 18-hole disc golf course that winds through the woods. “You also have Lake Michigan 45 minutes away with 3 large beaches — Holland, Grand Haven, and Muskegon — and some smaller ones,” Lewis says. More trailways lie south. Local bikers hop on the Fred Meijer M-6 Trail, a paved pathway with multiple trailheads that run alongside Highway 6.

Conveniences along Kalamazoo Avenue
Running errands is a breeze from Ridgebrook. “Walmart Super Center, Meijer and Family Fare are all 5 minutes away,” Lewis says. Heading south on Kalamazoo Avenue takes residents to a commercial center just outside the neighborhood. However, for a bite to eat, residents don’t even have to leave the neighborhood. Cabaña Tres Amigos is a popular spot tucked into Ridgebrook's east side, serving delectable Tex-Mex dishes.
Family Fare is a go-to for Ridgebrook residents to shop for groceries.
Mr. Burger on 44th St is a classic diner serving Ridgebrook and Grand Rapids for over 55 years.

Kentwood’s annual tree lighting
Every December, Kentwood has an annual tree lighting ceremony at the Richard L. Root Kentwood Branch Library, located northeast of Ridgebrook. Folks come for the tree lighting event and stay for the carriage rides, holiday music and luminary walk. The event features children’s activities, such as take-home craft kits and photos with Santa.
Highway 6 and Highway 131
State Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 131 are the main commuter routes for Ridgebrook residents. It’s about a 9-mile drive to downtown Grand Rapids from the heart of the neighborhood. Kentwood is a rather car-dependent area, but residents can still ride The Rapid, the Grand Rapids Metro Area’s public transit system.
